It makes sense once you see it explained but did you work that out, bibblebub, without knowing the number of letters or any letters?
i have to admit that, having solved all the other clues in the crossword, 'four by four' was the only thing that seemed to fit, and it was as i was looking at it again for this question that i suddenly twigged how the clue works
p.s. I do buy the Times on a Saturday (but that day only)
