I've got the radio on and a Southerner has just pronounced Yorkshire as "York-sheer".

You say "shire horse" not "sheer horse", so why change it?

Odd!

I disagree Count-A - I'm from Yorkshire and I pronounce it....Yorkshire
im in the midlands, so im neither here nor there, so i pronounce yorkshire with a bit of eer and a bit of ire
i live in northampton and people call kettering ketrin! dialect or plain lazy?
I agree with the count. Whenever I say, or think, of the name of a UK county I put an 'sha' at the end: not a 'shire' or 'sheer'.

Obviously there is no one on here from "Darn Sarf" as I haven't had any abuse yet lol
whereabouts in the US are you stewey?
I'm inclined to think of 'shire horse' as a well known title and pronunciation in its own rignt. When it comes to counties it is not unusual to hear them pronounced as ... sher or ...sheer in almost any part of the country. Do all Yorkshire people pronounce shire as in shire horse?

As an American who's lived here 20+years...in the south-I'm still not sure. It usually comes out as 'sher'.

Stewey is a Canadian cousin...;-)
I sometimes say Kent as well.....
