Anyone know the name of song and group who sang this song from in late sixties/early seventies?

We think It was called "Friends" it was a bit hippyish and went something like: Friends to beside you , friends to guide you, friends��.. We think it was in the top ten as it was performed on Top Of The Pops.

Beach boys - 1968.
Arrival - 1970.
Shalamar - 1982.
Amil Stewart - 1985.
