The Gibson SG's well rated, jay, and you'd probably be best to try Ebay. Otherwise, most guitar shops could get one in for you if they hadn't got one in stock already.
Wouldn't bother too much about the coil pick-up bit. All it is, is a transducer that picks up the mechanical vibrations. I only know, because my son's been playing for a while now, and he's recently had a new bass, and there are people in the family who've played in bands.

Cheers Ice.Maden - Take it the model type doesn't matter either? Jus ask as i've heard there can be alot of fakes about
There are several different models of SG. To be honest, choosing a guitar is a very personal thing,. Even the colour can make a diffference. Is this to be a surprise present? Unless you know the exact spec that the person wants I would let him choose it himself to be safe. By the way, I dont find ebay that cheap unless you hit lucky and find one that no-one else is bifdding for. Online shops can be cheaper that real shops. I used to use piedog.com but not sure if they still exist.

As johnny has said, buying a guitar can be a very personal thing, an SG might look great but sometimes you don't get the 'feel' of a particular guitar, no matter how good the name or how expensive. Is it a surprise? If not, why not visist a few guitar shops and try some out, you might even get a good deal. If you are near enough try Denmark Street in London for a wide selection, then check out your local stores, ebay, Loot, local papers etc and see what sort of price you can expect to payin comparison.

Ebay can be ok, but you don't really know what you are getting and whether the guitar is a genuine Gibson, lots of cheap copies out there with fake decals.

The pickup is the device under the strings that transfers the string vibrations to electronic sound through an amplifier (is this part of your buying idea as well?) Some are single coil pickups (SG has 3) and where you have two together, they are usually called humbuckers.

You might want to look at some of the info here:

Hi everyone just adding my tuppenceworth.

I have a SG and it has 2 hum-buckers not single coils. Some SG's do come with three pickups but others one or two. However I have never come across a genuine SG that does not have hum-buckers.

GAK in brighton, google it, are one of the most cost effective
