Not according to his life story as filmed. In his time gay meant 'be happy' not the filth it represents today.

In all seriousness, I have never seen any reference that suggests that he was. He certainly likes women as far as I know.

In the video for his version of hurt (the nin cover he did shortly before his death) it showed his second wife looking over him whilst singing. Now having a wife obviously doesn't mean that you can't be gay but i'd assume from it that hes probably not.
