iPod only plays half of the songs

My ipod nano has 389 songs on it, but a little less than half of those songs play. I do not have my itunes library that was originally synced to the ipod I have so I can only charge it and listen to whats already on it. The problem started when the "recently added" songs were not available anymore. Is there anyway I can fix this without hooking it up to a computer where I would have to erase the ones that are accessable?
