The origin of the phrase is derived from the Old English 'sang' which was originally a short poem intended to be sung. The term became popular in the 13th century. 'Songster' became a common description of a singer or a song bird. In the 17th century pocket songsters were mass-produced leaflets containing the words to popular tunes. By the warly 19th century songsters were so much in demand that they ran up to 32 pages long and were regularly updated to include the latest popular lyrics.
