Thanks To John Peel

Togo's thread reminded me of how much I miss John Peel - the sheer volume (ahem) of new music he introduced me to was staggering ... everything from Cream to The Pistols to The Smiths to Joy Division to some quite staggering electronica.

Went to see Free play this stuff ( from Tons Of Sobs ) which they did, and then they introduced the single that was to be released from the album they they had just finished recording.

I'm actually watching Sky Arts at the moment who are showing Deep Purple's Melbourne concert from their "Perfect Strangers" comeback tour from the mid-80s and chuckling at just how much JP would have hated it :-)

Free were a fine band, Tony - I saw them before/during/after their rise to fame - usually around B'ham or Cov

I actually preferred Bad Company due to Paul Rogers' much more mature vocals. Controversial, I know, but I never really rated Kossoff as a guitarist - I never thought he was as good as everyone else thought he was, and certainly not as good as he thought he was!

The first Bad Company album was exceptional - as good as (or better than) anything Free produced.

I got progressively less enamoured with them as they descended towards Stadium Rawck though ...

I interviewed John Peel for Zig Zag magazine, he took me out to dinner in Manchester where he was working at the BBC in Oxford Road. He was wonderful company, I will never forget it.

I loved his show, less for the music than for him, his fabulous personality and wit and his dry humour.

A wonderful man - sadly missed.

(Plus we shared an utter loathing for Simon Bates, although his was far more merited than mine!)
