Because they won't suffer party meltdown if they impose a three line whip.

Dogsbody...dave needs Labour MPs on his side if it comes to a vote. He has already failed to get this past Parliament once and he can't afford to allow it to happen again. The only reason that he needs Labour's help is that he can't rely on his own MPs to back him, and that's why he can't/won't allow a free vote.

For the record, I think we should go ahead and take action in Syria.
So you knew the answer all along then?

Zacs...I have already said that all parties should allow a free vote on this issue, but even with some Labour MPs help, it is still unclear whether a YES vote will arise.

Interesting rundown of each Parties stance on bombing in Syria, from the following BBC link :::

na na nana na you need us. Yes we do mikey we own up ok, can you think of another subject now.
One you don't already know the answer to perhaps?
If I was a Labour Party supporter or member, I'd feel pretty depressed over the way my leader keeps getting out-smarted and out-manouvred by just about everyone - including a large chunk of the parliamentary members as well as the Dave machine.

Just doesn't have the intellectual capacity, sadly.

As the UKIP candidate in Oldham said over the weekend - Corbyn is the gift that just keeps giving. I'd second that.

TTT...no crowing was intended ! Really !

But some interesting has come out of this whole affair :::

1....Right-wingers are in the majority here on AB

2....There are quite a few ABers that are against taking action in Syria.

3.... see 1 above...Corbyn has come in for a lot of stick since here elected !

4.....But opposition to bombing Syria would appear be popular on AB, so see 3 above !

5 ....Perhaps Corbyn isn't such a bad guy after all !
I'm not against it I'm against the half ar5ed way we will inevitably do it and by "we" I mean the civilised world.
"So you knew the answer all along then? "

you beat me to it...

he just echos news articles , by the time you get on here youve seen it a dozen times already....whats the point ?
Question Author
Dogsbody2....Are you for or against British bombing in Syria?

( you don't have to answer that if you don't want...I am just interested !)
'1....Right-wingers are in the majority here on AB'

You're probably responsible for converting some Mikey.
"Perhaps Corbyn isn't such a bad guy after all ! "

hes the court jester....like you he lives in the past ......
hes so naive it defies belief

TTT...I share your caution and concern mentioned at 17:45.

If this is going to go ahead, it needs everybody in the international community to act together.
Question Author
Zacs...that's as may be, but I can't help that ! I don't chop and change every other Election.
I do think that we should bomb carefully selected co-ordinates within the state of Syria - one's where there's a high probability of an ISIS Land Cruiser sitting over the co-ordinates. Now that's not quite the same thing as 'bombing Syria' - where some of my favourite refugees come from.
Me neither, Mikey. BTW I support the bombing.

Thanks dogsbody !
The Times today urged Corbyn to crack the whip. They won't get their way of course, in fact I'm not sure they were serious.
Any other decision by him would have meant half the Shadow Cabinet would have resigned.
So for now meltdown averted.
There are two things going on here: one is the argument about whether we should extend what we are already doing in Iraq ... to Syria. The other is about Jeremy Corbyn and his ideological opposition it would seem to any form of military action. I have no real time for that, as it sounds like he's making up arguments to suit his prior position. Corbyn is currently under the malign influence of the abysmal Seumas Milne. Even John McDonnell seems sensible compared to him
