Long story short, I have a new found love for piano music. Not just any though, there are a couple of pieces that I like. In my best description I'd say they were uplifting yet with underlying sadness...

The intro to both:

Adele - Hometown Glory
&
HIM - The Sacrament

They are both similar and I was wondering if there is a specific sub-genre to this type of piece, or maybe a link to a piece on youtube so I can venture forward myself.

Many thanks!

Anyone?
They both follow a fairly standard way of introducing a song. When the vocal begins, it just continues as what is known as "comping" (short for accompaniment.)

Depending on the time signature, they're probably just regular quavers. Nothing special. No particular genre . Just intros.

Alright thank you. I've done a bit of youtubing and found compilations of piano accompaniments which make a nice listen. thankyou for the info though :)
I've always thought the piano on Adele's Someone Like You was something I've heard before.
