Hi,

I want to download some classical music but I'm new to it! Can anyone give me some recommendations, preferably stuff I'll recognise e.g. from films, adverts, etc... or just anything good!

Thanks :)

Love the first link frog .. another to download, thanks.
'2001: A Space Odyssey' opens with Richard Strauss's 'Also Sprach Zarathustra'

. . . and ends with the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss II:

Can anyone suggest a piece of classical music that would suit looking out of a bus window on my journey to work in the early hours people watching/ watching the city come alive in the North? I remember I used to watch the 'Old grey whistle test' & loved how they put visuals to music.
Love the waltzes Buen!
Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. Many of the tracks are very well known and easily recognisable. One of them (the waltz of the flowers) instilled in me a lifelong love of classical music at the age of about 8
Elina:
For your journey to work I'd recommend Vltava. (See my Youtube video in the 3rd post on this thread).

As an alternative though, Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice is full of action that could be matched to what's going on around you - or, of course, you could just remember Mickey Mouse getting all of those spells wrong in 'Fantasia' ;-)

Thanks Elina. It always moves me to tears. I love it.
Some brill music on here - Thanks for sharing everyone xx

iamcarlry, you'll probably recognise this one even if you are new to classical music:
(I never listen to it if I'm feeling blue though as it makes me blub! It reminds me of walking down country lanes in the winter after I had a silly argument with someone, by the time I'd listened to this piece via classic FM on the pocket radio, I'd completely chilled out again)

can you give us some direction to what you actually like, other than recognisable.....choral, opera, ballet, instrumental (which), full orchestra, quartets etc etc etc......

On the films....how about this? (it's not strictly classical....)

Sorry Buen, went to watch a programme. Just listened to your link, I really love that , haven't heard that before. Not sure it suits what I want to feel for my journey to work though. May be I won't find it in classical, May be something else, thanks though x
Frog, I downloaded your music earlier, thanks for that.
Russian composers for me.

There is peas, all individual & for different moods, all with their own merit. I've really enjoyed listening to them all.

Beep! Beep! Lina! :-) Hope you are well?
This thread has re-kindled my wanting to hear more classical, may even dig out a few CD's for the car journey to work tomorrow

Some might recognise this one from Rick Steins 'Sea Odyssey' series:

One of my favourites, hope you enjoy
That's a good pick Sam, haven't heard that in ages - very relaxing...aaah :-)
Beep beep peas :0)
Hi to Dtc too ... & everyone on this thread who share a love of this music. I've enjoyed listening to every single one, some more than others. Peas, I played music on my bus journey to work this morning. Love Lark Ascending too! Thanks to iamcarley for the thread x
