When I hear some of her older stuff, I think she used to have quite a nice voice. Unfortunately, the years (and the cigarettes?) have not done her voice any favours and it's rather tough and raspy these days. Mind you, if she sticks to lyrics of the cynical, world-weary, sitting-on-a-bar-stool-mumbling-into-a-whisky variety ('song noir', so to speak), her voice is perfect!
Her voice never did appeal to me. She recorded a song called If You'll Come and Stay With Me and I recall this as being very flat. As the others have said, years of smoking and whatever else has done nothing to improve it.
i saw her last year or the year before in a show called The Black Rider. me and my freind thought she had an awful voice compared to the other people in the show and assumed she was included for the name and to draw the crowds, rather than talent (she couldn;t act either).
I quite liked her voice - I prefer to listen to female singers with deeper voices rather than screechy ones.(Don't set me off on that subject or I'll give you a list of screechy singers as long as your arm).
Apparently she taught herself to sing whilst doing her ironing.
