Have just used the phrase 'running round like a blue *rsed fly and it got me wondering - is there such a thing? And if so does it run round?

It's just your common bluebottle fly.
Isn't it the Australian name for a bluebottle ?
Well, it's certainly got a blue arse!

so this is just a slightly more condensed version of the same phrase!

I always believed it to come from the way a bluebottle fly hovers in a zigzag motion a lot before settling to land on something.
