I read in the paper this morning, that there is a new website called www.newreg.com where you can find the origination of a no. plate.

Do you know of any other sites which provide this service? (I don't mean Cherished/Private Plates). Thanks.

The website address may be a misprint in the paper, as it doesn't seem to work! Hence my question.

Have you tried digging around on www.newreg.co.uk ?

Not sure about a website to decode the letters, but in the good old days (showing my age) you could tell from the last 2 letters in the block of 3. eg. LNB 333 S - the NB denoted the Manchester area. I had a very old AA handbook which had a list of the codes.

That's still the case in most circumstances. My current registration ties in with the theory.

Hi Billy - I have tried several combinations including that one, but the info given isn't what I'm looking for. They are more for selling & as I already have a cherished no. plate, I don't need another!

Looking back at the origination of all our old no. plates seemed an interesting little project - so I think I'll e-mail the newspaper to find out the proper web-site address for this. That's if there 'really' is one. Other than that, I shall try to locate an old AA book like the one you had.

Thank you so much for your help. :0)

this site has a list, at the top is the list that was mentioned in earlier answer (i.e. last two letters from the old style plates, scroll to the bottom for the key to the new style plates which are all based upon the first two letters of the plate:
