Mk1 Audi A3...

...any Mk1 Audi A3 owners out there who can tell me what to 'look out' for in a prospective purchase? Is maintaining and Servicing expensive? I'm looking at the 1.8 Sport petrol model - prob. around an R, S or T reg. Thanks.

Its basically a Mk 4 golf in a posh frock, so it will be share that cars character, well built, but better to look at and own than it is to drive, which is a bit dull. The 1.8 Sport has a 0-60 time of 10.1 seconds which is not really that 'sporting', and the handling is stodgy, with a less than brilliant ride quality. The A3 body shape is also less roomy inside than the Golf. I believe that the TDI is the engine of choice, it has a little less BHP than the 1.8 petrol, but significantly more torque and is a lot more frugal.
