Due to the massive £6 million policing operation costs,

Plus, the need for all entrances to have search points in a bid to prevent weapons being carried,

Plus, mobile metal detection arches being used at some Tube and Rail stations.

Plus, 350 medical staff from the London Ambulance Service, who could be otherwise more usefully employed.

Plus, a four-week Met Police crackdown ahead of the event which resulted in 101 arrests and the seizure of knives, weapons and drugs.

Plus, the fears of gangs linked to drugs and violence who might clash during the carnival.

Plus, last year more than 200 people were arrested,

Should the Home Secretary also ban this march, perhaps even on health and safety reasons alone?

The name gives it away...It's a festival not a march
A carnival is a parade, not a march.
Plus, thousands upon thousands of people smiling. You know, that thing you do when BOTH corners of your mouth turn upwards.
i was working in a london hospital many years ago, when for about 2, 3 ,years the carnival was described as the nottinghill riots, our hospital was the nearest from nottinghill and we received many many injured people civilians and police and innocent bystanders, all medical and nursing staff were working, it did improve, hope it does not go back to those times
pa·rade (pə rād′)

noun

1. ostentatious or pompous display
2.
1. a military display or assembly; esp., a review of marching troops
2. a place where troops assemble regularly for parade; parade ground
3. any organized procession or march, as for display
4.
1. a public walk or promenade
2. persons promenading or strolling
5. an ostentatious succession of persons or things:

Mojo-jo-jo see No3
3. any organized procession or march, as for display
OK, I stand corrected.
what more useful work would ambulances be doing? Where would you rather the metal detectors were? Are you pleased that knives have been seized or not?

Bit wet to go and see the carnival today, but I've done so before without quaking in terror at the thought of gangs linked to drugs and violence who might clash during the carnival (has this ever happened?)
Even Cameron has had enough of Notting Hill

A report by the London Development Agency on the 2002 Carnival estimated that the event contributes around £93 million to the London and UK economy. (That was 8 years ago, so todays figure is probably considerably more).
Well done, thedodge - yours was one of the most pompous posts I've seen on this site. Never mind your tedious pedantry, do YOU think the Notting Hill carnival is a 'march'?

They seem to think it is a march.
Ah yes the annual Rasta Mugathon. How many knivings/muggings/lootings this year?
Usual load of I'll informed cobblers.

Tot up the number of arrests and policing costs for premiere matches EVERY WEEK...and count the number of arrests and tell me - should we ban football?

And as for "rasta mugathons' - typical comment from someone White and completely ignorant about black culture.

RASTAS DON'T MUG.

Read up about Rastafarians on Wikipedia to prevent you from posting foolish nonsense in future.
How do you know what colour I am SP? I don't think I've ever mentioned it on here. You seem to all hung up about it though.
As some of you know, I work as a Tube Train Driver on the Central Line, which covers Notting Hill, and I was working today, and I must say, that most (not all, but most) of the people that go by train, and that counts in the thousands, are well behaved, and looking to have a good time.

I certainly hope it continues.
So what colour are you R1 the fascist ?
R1 you may not have stated it outright but you do make it very clear by the tone of your comments... anyways back to the point - no the carnival should not be banned it does more good than harm and most people have good day out without being the victim or perpetrator of crime. As said the same issue re crime, cost etc etc could be brought up for almost all big events like rock festivals for example.

I also don't believe that the government should be encouraged to start banning celebrations, gatherings or indeed carnivals as it would be going further than the "nanny state" we complain about to something possibly more unpleasant
...and don't cop out with that "am I not allowed my opinion?" chestnut.
R1

No black person would use such ignorant terms as 'rasta mugathon'.

It's disgusting, and ******** foolish.

Tired of this constant stream of cobblers.
