How do they work out vehicle tax bands. I have a Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.0 and my tax band is J and my friend has a Ford Focus C-Max TDCi 2.0 and his tax band is F (half the price). I guess its emissions but surely every car is different and emissions are checked at MOT so should it not be taxed on that result? If you don't look after your car then it's emissions will be higher.

most company cars are sold or replaced by the time the first mot is due, the figures are based on the stated emmisions for that vehicle when it leaves the factory.
oops spelling error 'emissions'....doh!

just doesn't seem fair. Especially for the same engine and the same year (04 plate). I'll check my MOT emissions test and mount a legal challenge if it's less than the stated emissions. And if it's more I'll just shut up. Thanks BB

And if I use my car less than someone else then my emissions are less and...........etc, etc, etc.
No chance of you winning any legal challenge since the emissions of a car are set during type approval as per UK and EU regulations and these figures then become part of British legislation.
Ive always said mot test should be for safety, not bl***y greenpeace.

Just venting steam, ABerrant. And I agree razza, MOT should be for safety. It's annoying though. xx
