minor car scratches

my car has been 'peppered' with scratches, i believe due to workmen trying to manipulate a few sheets of wire mesh frame too close.
they are not deep , and only involve the very top most layer of paint, but can i just buy a can of car spraypaint and gently spray over them to 'heal' them?

or is there something else i must do - such as sanding etc?

if so, is it worth just trying the spray first, just to see if it works...then if not i can do the sanding thing.

thanks

hi, thanks...but the car is silver and the scratches appear white...so i dont think lightly sanding the surface will restore the silver colour...

anyone else got any ideas?
Maybe a colour restoring polishing wax would help?
Try local car accesories shop in high street,I find them more helpful that the big ones.
The only way spraying would help is if you are very very good at fine lines with an air gun type spray thing. You would not belive how coulor changes on a car, even if you match it correctly in the first place, sun, wind and stuff can change the colour so much it stands out like a sore thumb.
Good luck
