people with satnavs generally only have experience of their own satnav.

I have a TomTom 1 XL Europe, and I think it's great... but sometimes it drops off my windscreen!
we too have a tom tom and it's the only one we have experience of. it's taken us all over france and spain as well as the uk and defo wouldn't be without it. you do have to learn to trust it though and not think 'where the heck is it taking me?' because it does know best (unless you're towing a caravan and it takes you down some unsuitable roads - but that's another story!!)
tom tom or garmin .
used both, both good. get the ones with big screens and european maps.
bit more expensive but more useable and the euro maps are cheap if bought with the unit. bl00dy expensive if bought after!
Never forget that a sat nav has no intelligence whatsoever.

Try one out in your local area on routes you know and you will see what I mean.

Most of the time they are good, but occasionally they do stupid things.

Bear this in mind when you are using one, and you will be OK.

I also have used both Tom Tom and Garmin, and would take either of them.
