mercedes sprinter van problems

Hi, this really is a last ditch hope of a solution !! my husband has a mercedes sprinter van on x plate. It starts fine but as soon as you try to move off in gear the engine dies. The computer has been checked and reset and also the glow plugs have been changed. The only time it doesnt seem to happen is in reverse! The problem started a few months ago and was very intermitent but now happens all the time. You can be going along in 2nd or 3rd and try and go up a gear and it dies. Random problem I know but if anyone has any ideas what may be causing it I would be extremely grateful, lawsanass (Tue 15:51 23/Jun/09)

This might seem silly but is there a blockage in the fuel line so as soon as you put your foot down for it to 'go' the fuel can't get into the injector pump quick enough, it also might be a good idea to have an airline blow the fuel back into the tank this will blow any muck back into the tank then just re-bleed the line to the pump, also make sure the filter in the diesel line is changed as this can cause the same kind of problem....

deffo sounds like a fuel problem and to be honest theres not much else can go wrong with a diesel, whens the last time the fuel filter was changed?..could even be water in the filter housing.

hi there, we had the same problem with a sprinter but a 05 plate. there is a plunger switch on the clutch pedal similer to a brake light switch, its to stop people 'riding' the clutch and cuts the revs when the clutch pedal is pressed. our switch was sticky and a new one solved the problem. its worth a try as its not very expensive. good luck

this fault could be a wiring problem if there is a solenoid fitted on the injector pump, i would suggest checking for a constant live to the solenoid while "waggling " the wire.

This might sound stupid but my sprinter lost power so I took it to the stealers in Poole, It turned out to be a blown brake light bulb, the computer detected it and put the engine into limp mode, I was on the M25 at the time so a slow drive back for me all because a bulb blew.
