What's the current scrap value of a standard family car?

Just a tip, ring around your local scrap yards & ask them for their prices, they will more than likely say what do you want, depends whats on your car, eg radio good tyres, seats etc try it on EBay you may find you will earn more money for it but if you decide on the previous although the price of metal has now gone done ask what KJN has stated but stick to your guns, also you will get more by driving it to them if poss.

Yeah, I was thinking more buying a car from eBay for under scrap value...

You get paid if you deliver the car. If it needs collection then you pay the scrap yard.
