its like a side to side judder rather than the kangaroo type judder you get with bad clutch control. what would cause a car to do this? could a wheel bearing needing to be replaced cause a car to do this?

Engine Mounts, Oil on the Clutch plate, CV Joints N/S+ OFF/S.

it seems to come from the back rather than the front if that narrows it down any?
what vehicle are we talking about ?

could be rear suspension arms/bushes/links, not had a misshap on the ice and clouted the kerb have you ?
Question Author
its a 98 clio. someone did drive into the back of me a couple of months ago. ...
Unlikely a rear impact would cause this unless it was hard, very hard and on that year it would have been a write off.

Possibly rear brakes siezing on could be another option, although i tend to favour worn bushes. Rear axle bushes are a common MOT failure on these vehicles
Question Author
rear axle bushes.... are they expensive to fix? i know i need a rear wheel bearing done, there is a dreadful knocking at the front drivers side when going over bumps too and i have a short circuit thats making my lights do funny things and im wondering if i should even bother putting it thru mot. really annoying considering i paid to have the cam belt changed approx 11 months ago.
There is your problem, rear Suspension's bolts broken, was your car hit on the Off/Side or N/side? (Car out of Alignment) has this just started after the bump?
Question Author
the car was hit centrally at the rear but i actually think it WAS doing it before the bump, its just the problem seems worse now. also does it to a lesser degree when i change into second gear too. once car is up to speed i cant detect any judder.
Check your tyres! are they showing any signs of unusual wear? Is it poss to get the car on ramps to check the Suspension + shocks?
Question Author
i can check the tyres (when it stops raining) for abnormal wear pattern but it will have to go to the garage to get it onto ramps. i really appreciate your input and if you think of anything else please feel free to add to my thread. thank you ;o)
Question Author
sorry, thank you BOTH!
hmmm..sounds like front bushes too
that just isnt going through another MOT ..whens it due? at least that way you will a list of what needs doing
Question Author
chas i guess i worry that i will get the list of things to get it through its mot and tell the garage to work to list and when i get the car back the knocks and rattles come from non mot-able parts and i spend out a load of money and it comes back in no better condition.... then what a waste, i still wouldnt be able to sell it and i would be X hundred pounds worse off. still, i suppose everyone with an old banger, limited funds and no knowledge of cars has the same problem!
warped clutch pressure plate for me
parkinsons?
You are better with the devil you know than start again from scratch mandimoo, I would not be disheartened by the problems, If the body of the car is good you can get the Mechanics sorted.
Just a though, check the wheels themselfs! are they alloy? have you hit a kirb?
