Low idle throttle speed

I have a vauxhall Vectra T reg auto 1.8 - I have a problem with low idle throttle speed and it frequently cuts out when stopping/slowing down at lights, junctions etc. I have been told to get a new throttle unit, which I believe is a sealed unit. I have heard the vauxhall ones develop the same problem and I should buy Ecotec.
Does anyone have any advice and is there anything I can do to improve it in the meantime?
