service history (if genuine) is not confirmation that the vehicle has been looked after well, ie a vehicle that has been driven hard and badly may still have a full service history, and there are far too many garages out there that (even though paid to do so) dont do a proper job!
If you don't know any reputable mechanics personally, you can have the vehicle checked out by an AA mechanic before you buy. Costs about £60 i think, then if you decide to buy, it wont be "sold as seen" and you'll have some come back if anything goes wrong!

If its the old shape Clio I'd say its well overpriced, if its the new shape car its about on the money if slightly over for the miles

It sounds too expensive for starters, I have seen them go through auction for about £200.

Service history can sadly be forged.

High milage is ok for bigger engines and diesels but a 1.2 at nearly 125,000 is pushing it a bit.

My advice, get the boy to shop around, and perhaps add another £200, he will be able to get a fairly decent Ford fiesta or Saxo for £1000.

We have had Rover Metros and Mini Metros both of which were cheap little runarounds.

Plenty of good affordable cars if you look hard enough, I search little shop ad's and supermarket boards, and try and find private sellers.

Good Luck

For what it's worth Steve, it's way over priced, it's a monkey max, but that is as nothing to what the insurance will be for a new driver, ouch!
