Fuel pump icon on dashboard - myth?

Is it true, or is it a myth that the little petrol pump icon on your dashboard has a pump hose drawn on the right hand side of it if your petrol tank/filler cap is located on the right hand side of the card, and the pump hose is drawn coming out of it on the left, if your petrol tank/filler cap is situated on the left hand side?

This is true on my car, but don't know whether this is just coincidence, or whether manufacturers really do this to indicate to drivers which side the fuel tank is on.

On fords most of the pump hose icons have an arrow next to them indicating what side the filler cap is.

tubeway - that's strange because we also have a Vauxhall Vectra, and both the dashboard iron pump, and the filler cap for the petrol tank are on the RIGHT hand side.
Both my fords have an arrow saying which side the filler cap is on , hadn't noticed until you prompted me to look , better get my anorak on and check for other trinklets ......

My first car was a pre-war Citroen Light 15, it had a filler cap on BOTH sides (anyone else remember those). However as it was ove fifty years ago cannot remember if it even had a sahboard icon.
Interesting question, I will check mine when the tank gets lower.

on my sisters 206 im sure the hose on the icon is on the same side as the tank filler thing but I'm not really sure and I know diddly squat about cars!
On my Honda the icon is on the right but the filler is on the left.
