The 'malfunction indicator' ight has come on on my nissan micra all the handbook says is 'take it to a dealer' - anyone have any idea what the problem may be (i.e. are we talking thousands of pounds or hundreds?)

TIA

Could be anything, you don't haver to take it to a dealer, many garages have the right diagnostic equipment to access the fault codes in the system. We charge 45 + VAT for a diagnostic plug in but I've seen it cheaper.
With a Vauxhall Corsa about 3 years ago, the same warning light came on & a dealership computer diagnosis
came up with 2 possible component culprits. The 2 (easily fitted, clip-in) components cost about 50 each but which one? So I booked it in & was presented with a bill for 150!
I believe that Main Dealorships make their main profits from servicing, spare parts & repairs, not from car sales.
