retarting a renault clio

I've changed from driving a peugeot diesel estate to a petrol renault clio - what's the proceedure or what am i doing wrong if I stall it and it won't restart after the red light has gone out ( it does usually start again but I can never be sure how long it is before it will!)

Only trying to help but some Renaults cannot be started if the car is in gear.
