Does anyone know of a car hire company who will hire to a 17 year old. My sons brand new (3 months old) Astra
has broken down!!!!! and Vauxhall can't find him a curtesy car. Should a gear box go on a new car? I'm gob smacked that they aren't falling over themselves to help us. Maybe it's just me.

Very unlikely to get hire car when only 17.

Get on to Vauxhall head office about no courtesy car.
If it's not your son's fault his car has broken down.IE not checked oil and such, then I would be raising merry hell with VX and complaining to whoever I thought could help, Headoffice, newspapers, consumer protection absolutely everyone if a courtesy car was not forthcoming sharpish
I imagine Vauxhall cannot find him a courtesy car as he would then have to be on the same type of insurance policy as a car hire company. He would not be able drive on his own policy as at best this would only cover him for 3rd party damage.
I'm still trying to get over the fact that a 17 year old has a brand new car !
You will be able to have a courtesy car if you insure the car yourself - but whoever is providing the car will need to see written evidence of the cover, and it will have to be specifically fully-comp on that registration number.

As regards 'should a gearbox go on a new car' - that's what the vehicle warranty is for, to cover any manufacturing defect within the warranty period. Warranty, not guarantee...
