I've got an old van which sometime in its history, got fitted with an alarm system. To disable the alarm and start the car, I have to the indicator as if to turn left....yes, I know. So secure isn't it. Trouble is I think its messing he indicators up as they dont always worka dn I then have to start the van with a live wire, bypassing the ignition. I just want the thing disconneted but my local garage says I need a specialist auto electrician. Does that sound right?

Yes, but if you trace the wire's from the alarm you can find the live wire going to it. disconnect it then trace the other to see where they go, then disconnect them too. On the live wire form the alarm, it sured be connected to a live wire in the wiring loom on the van. Once you have disconnected the two wire's from the alarm, connect the two wire's in the wiring loom back together and you sured be able start the van.
