problem with fiat punto

Hi, i have an x-reg fiat punto and recently when i drive it short distances the engine fan comes on and the engine coolant red symbol illuminates on the dash board. I have filled my radiater water up twice in two days and it seems to take alot of water each time. What could be causing this.
