You can only ride up to 125 on your own with L plates. You can ride up to 500 with an instructor during lessons if you are over 21.
why bother shelling out for a 500 only to strp it down to a 125
...possibly to avoid having to 'trade up' to a 500 cc machine after passing (good luck!) their test. Maybe you should have a look at the Honda CBR125R. It often gets good reviews as a bike that you can ride up to the test, and carry on enjoying afterwards.
Can't be done in the situation you describe i.e. on a CBT and L plates.

You can do a 2 part license which restricts the size of motorcycle after you have past your test. There are some bikes which are already restricted in this instance but to get any old bike and restirct it would 1. cost a lot of money and 2. most likely mess with the bike too much.

As Just a bit said CBR125 is half decent and if you get it second hand should hold it's value failry well if you just want it to do a cbt ride a bit and then pass your test.

as has been said, 125 on l plates.

once you pass you can ride up to 33 bhp. this can be a big restricted & plated bike.

i would suggest, buy a cheap chinese 125. pass your test and flog it. then buy a bike that comes in the 33bhp limit. that will give you your best chance to get used to biking without being overwhelmed by a big (heavy ) bike.

when your licence is ok then you can look at what is available full power then, bike models move on very quick.

i know it seems the wossie way to go but as a biker of 28 years i can honestly say the restricted 33bhp is one idea that i agree with.you can still do over the ton on one of these!

i forgot to say i am currently running a fazer 600. good for 145 and 90/95 bhp. loads of fun!!
