Why do the seat belts on my Suzuki Jimny never return to the original position when I take it off? It always ends up getting trapped in the door. It happens on the passenger and driver door.

Is your Suzuki quite old?

All seat belts did this when they were first fitted to cars. the automaticly retracting seat belts came in later, perhaps they were fitted to your car because they are less expensive.

I don't know of a Suzuki in the last thirty years that doesn't have 'inertia' seatbelts (makes them lock when pulled quickly).

They are spring compressed, and are meant to recoil when let go. If the spring is snapped or worn then they will not retract.
Thanks,
Steve
Sometimes this is caused by a simple build up of dirt - dust - human hand grease and gunge (technical term) on the belts which makes them stiff and sticky, sometimes all you have to do is clean and brush them with hot water and detergent and they will work OK.

Thanks for your replies. My car is only 5 years old. They do retract a bit but I always have to untwist them, then they go back in. it's not the way I take them off because it happens to whoever uses my car. Maybe it's just a design fault - there seems to be a few on this car!!
Try pulling the belts all the way out and see if there are any twists for their whole length if there is straighten them.
