BMW X5 Cam belt

Should a cam belt be changed as part of a regualr seervice at any point? Is there any way of checking if it has been done?


I have a 4 year old Diesel X5 with 100k miles and wonder at wehat point it has/should be done ?

There is'nt anyway of checking whether it has been done unless some bmw garage has the records.


If it has not been done for 100k don't drive it any further and get it changed now! If it breaks the repairs will cost about �2000!


Get a handbook to find out when it should be changed, might get a cheap one on ebay.

Ive just spoke with a BMD dealership and they say the Diesle X5 doesnt have a cambelt. ... it has achain thats an integral part of the enguine that lasts the lifetime of the engine ??

Don't get confused!


Having a chain driven camshaft is better than a belt, They last forever, if it does start to wear or the chain tensioner wears you will just get a slight rattle from the front of the engine.


I wish I had one on my engine.
