For a long time now, I have had problems with the top thumb joint. It suddenly 'catches' And I'm screaming in agony! As I have EDS and a lot of joint problems, my instinct is that this is subluxing. Maybe I have made it too mobile through phone use- Scrolling/holding? I had an x-ray and the GP said it was mild arthritis. I can't use my thumb or hand, as my top joint simply doesn't bend, and when it does, it is agony. Does this sound like mild arthritis to you? I have arthritis in my knees, and it's nothing like this! However, I do have a bit Under my kneecap, which also 'catches' in certain positions, and again, so painful. I have to try and waggle it back! Is my doctor right or wrong?

The differential diagnosis from mild arthritis is a soft tissue injury. These usually do not show on an x ray. They can be diagnosed with ultrasound. The vast majority of the they get better on their own and you should waggle it so it does not stiffen up. They can take months and not weeks to get better. However do not push it, apply force on it or click it with the other hand. If it doesn't get better on its own you might need an operation.
