Mumbai/Bombay was built on an archipelago of 7 islands, one of which is actually called Bombay to this day. From the 3rd century BC they formed part of the Maurya Empire. More recently they were part of the Portuguese Empire in the mid 17th Century and were in fact given to King Charles II by King John IV of Portugal as part of the dowry for his Marriage to his daughter Catherine of Braganza and thus became part of the English Empire.
