I think I heard a mumble the other day about them phasing out 2p and 1 p coins.Did I hear right? I agree they are pretty useless now, but i always wait until I have a few and then I put them in the next charity box I see. There are so many worthy charities. that need our help.

The mumble you heard was that they were NOT phasing them out.

Thank you all for your replies.x
you realise that any price increase in crease will be 5p minimum then
I saved my Tesco receipt from Thursday and added up what it would have cost me if everything was rounded up to the nearest 5p. On a £120 shop, it was 27p
I put all 1p 2p 5p and £2 coins in a box... tip the small coins into a change machine when full and get shopping voucher nearly £30 last time I emptied it..£400 + when last I emptied the other...

Fairly obviously, if the smallest denomination coin was 5p, there would be nothing priced at 99p.
My friend did that murraymints until I pointed out the machine takes a 10% fee, she hasn't done it since. Counts it up by hand and takes it to the bank.
Minty I too have some 1ps and 2ps etc but don't know whether it is worth my while to put into change box as I believe you are charged. Is that correct.
sorry cashier - didn't see your post

it does charge ..but no bank in my village anymore ! and to feed a self serice with £30 + of coins would take forever !! lol
Our local NatWest has an automatic change counter
There is no charge for using it
Use them to pay parking ticket fines etc.. like this guy.

If a price ends in "99" for example £1.99, it would increase by a penny to £2.
To be perfectly honest, I'd prefer to see the back of the 5p !!!! Nasty little sod has a habit of hiding in the corners of my purse, and refuses to be picked up.
If the 1p and 2p coins were scrapped things would still be priced at 82p, 43p, 99p etc - just as fuel is charged at 127.6p now.
Use a cashless payment and you will pay the proper price, pay cash and the total would be rounded up or down to the nearest 5p.
No matter how much you spent you could only be overcharged by a total of 2p. If your shopping bill came to £130.03 you would pay £130.05. If it came to £130.02 you would pay £130.
We’re moving towards a cash free and digital currency society anyways “ cash out” while you can.
