I Have Seen Some Motorway Site With These!
Done many thousands of motorway miles in my Employment as a HGV Driver & seen some carnage, been that the Caravan season is coming close I dread to see / hear of accident caused by inexperienced Caravan drivers, I don't know the present legislation regards Testing these Car / Caravan drivers but I think It is time full ability test, I'm not knocking all drivers of these "Artic's" but I think the time has come to have a competence test, what's your views?

They messed about with the laws in 1997 and again in 2013. Basically, as long as the combined mass of the towing vehicle plus the mass of the trailer doesn't exceed 3.5 tonnes you are covered by your standard category B licence. Most car/caravan units weigh much less than 3.5te so don't need an extra test.

TWR is not moaning about bad drivers, TWR is asking members opinion's regards Further Tuition driving cars/ caravans, also TWR does NOT NOW drive a HGV which I was trained to do, and that training give me the experience to control in the event of a Jack Fife which incidentally some of these inexperience so-called drivers fail to do, & in doing that risk their families lives to some extend I have seen happening, & in some cases death, Graham, I think you are wrong on that score, just look at BOO' post, that tells you everything.
It isn't just the combined weight that causes problems. The length of the combined vehicle, (ie car and van) and the effect of cross winds and draft from other vehicles quite often causes accidents. Some vans are large and light, winds affect them greatly

A lot of people retire and decide to do the "grey nomad" thing, (well in Oz it seems to happen). A lot of these people have only driven shopping trolley cars and have spent a lot of time catching trains and buses to work. Once they are on the open road controlling a few tons of vehicle that is highly affected by wind, well, you can guess the outcome.
Maybe a theory course in towing trailers may help, watching video clips of what may happen, plus a driving test with a large trailer attached.

Have you been DRAWN into the "wake" of an Artic Quoi? the driver must have forgotten that he / she had a trailer behind them, he / she should have waited but no, he / she paid the price for been impatient, seen it / been there, the Car / van is an artic, a close coupled trailer no matter hoe you try to define it, the difference, the HGV has the Weight to hold it to the road, these things have not, I have delivered to the Companies that make them, there is nothing in the things only wood, I am not Knocking caravan's Quoi, what I am saying, If buying the driver should have a further test, I have seen some drivers trying to reverse with the things, some are a joke as you will have seen yourself?
My father inlaw is a "grey nomad" TWR. Guess who has to reverse his van in when he visits?. How many "dings" do you think it has?. Last time I parked it for him I commented, "can't see anything in the left hand wing mirror". He told me "you don't really need one".
