We regularly drive 200 miles up and down the motorways.
It used to be that Sunday was the quietest day by far..few lorries or commercial vehicles, no 'shopping' traffic, just a few Sunday drivers.
Not any more. Today was almost as busy as a week day, and the service stations were heaving (that's another thing, how people behave in the motorway service stations and loos, I could write a book..perhaps I will)
So what day do you reckon is the quietest day for motorway travel?

Saturday. You get a lot of holiday home people on Sundays who are going back to the smoke for the week.
Christmas Day.
Snap. We travelled down from Edinburgh today and it was a nightmare. Weatherby services had men directing the traffic into parking spaces !

We normally travel early Sunday about 6-7am which is usually quiet but we left latter today (9.30ish)

You could have a point there, 237SJ..
Well, I'd agree about Christmas day, I don't necessarily want to travel JUST on Christmas day ;)
Don't think there is such a thing as a quiet motorway day anymore, it's a 24/7 world now.

Mazie, we left at 8.45 and the first hour wasn't so bad. After that though, it was really busy..where are all these people going on a Sunday? Very inconsiderate in my opinion :)
even the M25 is quiet on Christmas Day, ethandron, you could have fun driving round and round
Agree ethandon.... I've never seen it as bad as it was today.... the wait for the ladies at Weatherby must have been at least 20 minutes. We travel up once a month and usually the journey is fine on a Sunday.
lol mazie, when you've waited a month to use the loos, that extra 20 minutes must be the last straw

The queueing in ladies loos does my head in...one lady stands there, starting the queue, just at the entrance, so that when you enter the loos you immediately think there's a huge queue..there isn't. If that lady just moved up..
And then there's even getting into the services...two sets of double doors and only one door is open, so people act like sheep and queue up to get through ONE door....OPEN ANOTHER DOOR!!!
Love from grumpy old lady xx
Oddly, Friday mornings are quite peaceful.

then do what the French do - go in the gents. :-)
Sunday is quieter than the rest of the week but it is busy 24/7 now.
It took us 4 hours to get from Dover to Banbury a few Saturdays ago - the M25 was solid nearly all the way to Heathrow :-(

We came back the other way - 2.5 hours.
that's the luck of the draw boxtops - "the other way" is infested with roadworks, with no hard shoulder all it needs is a broken down truck and you'd be there for hours.

Friday is by far the very worst for driving anywhere.
I drive on the M25 most days, and can assure you that Friday morning is the quietest weekday morning normally.
