I am buying my first car and have decided on a BMW 318 saloon. I am only spending 3000 therefore it would be about 1996/1996 with quite hghe mileage. Does anyone have one and would recommend it or not ? Any information gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 318is (1997 Auto) and I love it, i've never had any problems with it. Advice,  just make sure you get a Full BMW Service History, dont worry too much about mileage, mine has done 100k and will go on for years.Good luck!
Build quality is second to none, so high milers not a problem. Full service history is an absolute must, it's the only way you can verify the mileage, and reassure yourself that the car has been looked after, also means you will get the best price when you come to sell it on.

Please be careful.

If you are buying a high mileage car, you perhaps cannot do better than this type. I have a 320i and I guess it maybe only has 300K left in it...

However, if bits start falling off it, you may run into great expense to keep it running. Watch for:

-Suspension

-Transmission.

Other than that,if you can get a decent one...Go for it. The handling on a 3 series is second to none.
