Blimey that was quick! Have you used them before?
http://www.economycarhire.com and http://www.rentalcars.com , I have used both these with no trouble, driving in Portugal is easy & a joy.
they are all there, budlet....just as easy as renting one here. Remember its worth taking the paper half of your licence as well as the plastic.
Economy car hire. Have used these more than once. They act as agents for local car hire firms. You have to pay at time of booking, but one good thing is they offer a fair fuel policy (pick up and drop off with same amount) No paying for full tank and drop off empty.
Economy Car Hire
From within the UK 0845 450 0877
From outside the UK +44 (0)1362 853938

Have used them for 6 years previously but not, for the last three, as we have been going elsewhere. However they would always be our first port of call.
We have always used holidayautos, probably a dozen plus times, quite competitive and have never had a problem with them.
I've always used Auto Jardim at Faro airport. They are very good, and the place where you pick up the car is right at the Arrivals terminal.
Remember to drive on the right.
Yes but not until you get there
Imagine you are hiring a car in Inverness - it's a bit like that but most of the driving is on the other side of the road.
I've driven in Portugal and Inverness and in both cases I found the biggest traffic hazard was English tourists.
That's not a nice thing to call the deer, wharton!
I was over there a few weeks ago and used

They use local agents - if you can get a hire from Travel Rent via Economy Car Hire then they are very friendly and also have the best system for paying the Motorway Tolls (a transponder on your windscreen) rather than some of daft methods used by other companies.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I have just got a really good deal with Economy Car Hire.
You will be asked to deposit 20 euros, refundable, payable when you pick up car ( with firms supplied by economy car hire anyway) for possible use of motorway.
Also a credit card is swiped, returned if no damage. See terms.
Border crossing into Spain is extra. Payable on pick up also.
Car hire desk is located in "The Shed" as its known as, in Car park 4.
Hi,
Try www.portugal-cars.com
Good service in Portugal and Algarve since 2002

malagabob, this business of toll roads was not something I was aware of. I have paid an extra 20 euros to have an electronic tag in the car which I am told will save me having to pay tolls elsewhere. Just out of interest, do you know how much it costs to drive on the toll roads?
http://www.autocarhire.com/travelblog/featured/information-about-the-road-tolls-on-the-algarve-a22-motorway/ I always stick to other roads, so cant give any first hand info. But maybe this list will be of help
