transfer of car tax disc

I know that in years gone by it was not possible to transfer a tax disc from one vehicle to another when you bought a new car, but now I have been told by the vendor that the DVLA will transfer the tax at their end to the new vehicle, he wasn't specific but I assume they then send a new disc?

You can't transfer a tax disc. you buy a new one and cash in anything left on the old one.

oh, so in the past several decades the DVLA have invested in all sorts of fancy new technology but never changed that system? this vendor reckons they have though, i'll ring the dvla tomorrow and suggest they change the way it's done, it seems to me that if they can alter their computer records they should include road tax transfers too.
You have to do it yourself as it is the only way you can prove you have insurance for that vehicle by showing it along with the MOT if it needs one. As said earlier any tax left on vehicle has to be sent in for refund if at least one calender month left on it.
As I have just pointed out you have to show vehicle is insured by you for you to get a tax disc, they wouldn't be able to transfer over without it.
Tha tax disk can remain on the same vehicle when it's transferred to a new owner. Is that the confusion here?
What happens if you have, for example, a Fiesta with a £100 per year tax disc and you want to transfer it to a Ferrari that chucks out CO2 by the barrow load that costs over £500 per year to tax? How would they administer this if you cold do such a thing?
Good luck with phoning them, all I ever get is a recorded message and you can't seem to get through to a real person
