Myself and my husband are traveling to Vietnam next month and we wondered if it was safe and easy to hire a car to travel around the country to see the sights? Are hire cars readily available and also are they very expensive per day? Also is the traffic safe, ie can we drive through the center of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi with ease? Thanks in advance for your help<a href="http://www.puretravel.com/Guide/Asia/So

Didn't the three stooges from Top Gear have to go on mopeds in Vietnam 'cos there were no cars to be had?
No Dicky, that's the television. It's entertainment, creating unlikely scenarios and kicking the arse out of it for comedy.
Apparently you have o convert your International Driving License into a temporary Vietnamese one, see here.

I think you would be better using public transport or hire a car and driver
they used to be cheap to hire - if you are staying in a better hotel, contact them and organise something if the prices are still reasonable. There are some safety issues so best to go premium end of the market.
Having been there then came back I had a deeper appreciatation on how safe our roads are in comparison to developing nations. I would advised against hiring a self drive car for safety reasons and less chance of you being targeted for scam accidents. Instead hire a native driver who knows the roads and places well leaving you to enjoy your holiday.
