I have an old photograph of a couple and in the background I can see Whitby Fruit Store and a shop called Faye's (I THINK it may be a dress shop). I believe that the photo is pre 1960. Does anybody know the name of the road; it looks as though it may be the main high street. I've tried to Google but it's coming up with Castleton for some reason; I thought that was a different place. Can you help please?

As you would imagine most of the old shops have been turned into places for visitors . There is a place about 12 miles from Whitby called Castleton but it wont be there. The only other Castleton I know is in the Peak District.

Your best bet would be to ask again when Mrs. Overall is on as she may well know.
Hi horseshoes, I'm not from Whitby unfortunately but absolutely love the place and visit often, I have found this site which may help your quest...

Move your mouse over the map and it brings up photos, or browse the site. You may see something familiar that'll help you. Good luck!

Hi Dagman, Thanks for that. What a great way of seeing around a town. Unfortunately I wasn't able to match it up to my photo, but I shall have another look tomorrow. Oddly enough, I was having a browse at AB immediately after posting my question and therewas a question about fish and chips. Lots of people mentioned Whitby and I was hopeful that one of them might have replied to my question but alas they didn't. Oh well! Thanks again Dagman.

That was strange. Seadogg's reply wasn't there when I looked first time! Thank you Seadogg, I shall certainly watch out for Mrs O.
You're welcome. We are booked into Whitby near the harbour. It's a bit late in November but as I say we love it there. The best fish and chips there can be found at the Magpie or, on the other quieter side of the harbour turning right away from the sea, there is a chippy about 300yds along just as good.
I haven't been in Whitby for some time, since I arrived in a box.
We go to Whitby quite regularly from here. I will try to find out this shop if I can and get back to you. Can you put the photo on,perhaps as your av, for me to see.

I won't put it as my Avatar as it may get stuck again, but here's the photo. Perhaps somebody who knows about cars will even be able to identify the car on the left! I'm really after the name of the street and the approximate date. Thank you.

Are you sure it is Whitby? It could be the name of the proprietor as apposed to the town. (Just a thought)
Hi horseshoes, if the link works... could be a starting point. Best of luck.

no problem. :-)

Dave.
Hellooooo from Whitby.
The shop names and the appearance of the street ring no bells.
On Wednesday morning I am meeting an 87 year old relative (Whitby born and bred) and I'll show him the photo.
Unfortunately I am going straight from his house into hospital for an operation so I won't be able to reply for at least 3 days....but I will get back to you.
A friend of mine owns the Sutcliffe Gallery in Whitby and what he doesnt know about old photos of Whitby isnt worth knowing.

I will get back to you xx
Hi, me again
I've done a mental recce of every street in town and I can't think of one that wide.
I've also phoned my mother in law (83) and she says she doesn't remember either shop.
Question Author
Thank you Mrs O. I'm pretty sure that in that case it must be Ellesmere Port's Whitby Road.

Hope your operation goes well, and that you'll be better very quickly. x

This is the e-mail I've had back from the "THIS IS WHITBY" website.

"I think i can help you if im right it looks like the road leading down to the swing bride on the east side of the harbour as i remember it, but i will pass this on to Glenn when he comes back of holiday he might be able to help more then i can"

It doesn't look like a hilly road though so I have my doubts on that one.
lovely photo horseshoes. I love looking at old photos, especially since starting to geneaology. Hope you have some luck in finding out about the photo. Well done to Mrs O and everyone for trying to help. What a lovely, friendly site this is xx
