Part worn tyres
A friend bought some in whitehaven. He says they are a good way of saving money. Has anyone here bought any before and would they recommend them or not ?

I wouldn't touch them TeddyBoy. Tyres are the most important safety devices on the car - you can't scrimp on them. Fitting part worn tyres is as ridiculous as when people fit second-hand brake parts or shock absorbers. Part-worn tyres will have different properties to the others on the car, especially if they aren't fitted as a pair on the same axle as you should always do. There's also the fact that tyres alter in composition as they age and older tyres will not have the same properties as when they were new. The car will handle differently than when new tyres are fitted and stopping distances are also affected. The MoT test will soon fail a car with tyres that are over a certain age for those very reasons.
Provided you ask for a mid-range tyre and not something like Michelin or Pirelli new tyres are reasonably priced. If someone can't afford mid-ranged new tyres then they can't afford to own a car. Always buy new and never just change one tyre at a time -always the pair on an axle. As I said, tyres are the most important safety feature on the car - you can't penny-pinch.

I wouldn't, tyres are important, they're worth spending extra on for new ones.
When I was young and stupid, I bought some worn tyres (as I also didn't have the money for new ones), a few weeks later, they blew out on me whilst driving in the country, I got stranded over night and had to wait til morning before I could get new tyres.
Long story short, always buy new tyres.

I have had part worns in the past, but doubt you will actually save money in the long run. You don't get as many miles as with new ones, so end up buying more tyres before long.

I suspect if you just tootle around town then they might be woirth considering, but I'd be loathe to risk them as I do a fair amount of motorway driving.
I never looked into the economics but figured some of the cost must be down to the fitting, and part worn ones will need replacing more often, so was there any incentive ?

You have no way of knowing how second hand tyres have been treated, they could have been kerbed, run flat or contaminated with chemicals such as solvents or fuel. By the time you have paid for fitting and balancing I doubt they are worth it on a financial basis apart from the safety issues. For driving around the country estate, probably OK.
I looked at black circles and also another site that i was recommended by a neighbour.

That one was actually the cheaper and im off today to get 2 new front tyres with a lifetime punture repair/ replacement guarantee from a local garage at cheaper than the instore price.Thanks for all the advice.
