I added these to my other message but am not sure how anyone will know they are there! Sorry - am quite new here and still trying to learn how things are done. Hope I haven't broken any rules.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction with a couple more please - am a bit baffled.
They are all things associated with water.

1. Under water betting shop? (5)
2. Sounds like a long mournful moan (5)
3. Awarded first place? (8)
4. Tired from smoking? (6)

Thank you.

Thank so much Jan1957 - took some thinking about but I can see it now! Never would have got that one myself.
2 Whale (sounds like wail?)
3 Goldfish ?!
1 Coral
Question Author
WOW - thanks so much quizmonkey. Can you explain the "Coral" answer to me ... I know what it is but how does that tie-in with a betting shop please?
Question Author
I have an answer for another question but don't understand it ... are you able to explain it or tell me I'm on the wrong track?
It is ... A coin after South and I have put Scent.
I think it must be wrong.
Coral is a high-street betting shop:
www.coral.co.uk/Betting
There are a chain of well known betting shops called 'Coral'
Scent fits the clue perfectly (coin = cent, after S for south) - but nothing to do with water?
Question Author
Hello quizmonkey and the winner ... well, you sure do live and learn! Will now be keeping my eyes open to spot them. Thanks.
I think that Squid is more likely to be your answer given the theme of the quiz.

S=south + quid =coin
as opposed to scent
S=south + cent=coin
a coin after South = I think this is S-quid

Thanks for the scent explanation ... I am trying really hard to learn how to do clues like this and know to use a "s" as in this instance. I can't tie-it in to water though so the answer is right but not for this clue.

Can you say if another of my dodgy answers might be right please - do say if I am being too cheeky but am just so keen to learn.

For "It travels in a straight line" I have put eel - but have no idea why.
another crossed post ladyalex! Great minds.................

LadyAlex & The Winner ... I just had a "duh" moment! But was glad to be on the right track at least. I am slowly learning that quite a few clues have patterns to them and that is one I now recognise. Of course my difficulty is then coming up with the right words in the first place.
Am really grateful for your help and explanations.
I think ray would be better - as in ray of light
Happy to help :-))

(I think quizmonkey is right with Ray)

Gosh Quizmonkey I wouldn't have come up with that. Thank you.
You are all very clever and I feel quite dumb right now.

There is another clue that says "Will this spoil a rock garden?" May I assume I can subsitute "will this spoil" for "MAR" and then just need to find another word to follow to mean a rock garden do you think?

Only help if you really don't mind.
