sitting with learner driver

my friend is taking driving lessons at the moment. i have been passed my test for 6 years
my friend wants me to sit next to them as they drive. do i need to have my own insurance to sit with them

You would surely need to be insured to drive that car at least.

No. As long as you hold a licence to drive the same type of vehicle as your friend is driving, you are just a passenger. It is your friend's responsibility to see that his/her insurance is in order.

A person accompanying a learner driver has to be insured for the car being driven, this would normally be done by the learner including them on their insurance if it is the learner's car. In law the holder of the full licence is in charge and responsible for the vehicle at all times and must be in a fit state to drive, glasses worn where necessary, sober etc. etc.

You obviously do fulfil the requirements, carlos, but the rules are that the accompanying driver must be over 21 and have held (and still hold) a full licence for three years.If he does not fulfil theses requirements both the learner driver and the accompanying driver can be charged with an offence.

No insurance for the accompanying driver is necessary (unless, of course, he intends to drive the vehicle at any time).

On reflection that is mis-leading, the supervisor doesn't HAVE to have insurance for the car but it would be daft not to in case they need to take over at some point, the rest holds true.

No mention of needing insurance to accompany a learner but it makes sense. If the learner gets into a position they feel uncomfortable in and the accompanying driver has to take over then he would have to be insured.
If the accompanying driver has his own car covered fully comp. he would probably be covered to drive the car on his own policy. Check the policy to be sure.
