My 'W' Reg Toyota Rav 4 has developed a machine-gun like knocking when steering on full lock & now continues when going forward at low speed. One garage suggests rear differential problem & another universal joint trouble, neither diagosis is very definite & Both are very expensive. What is best course of action?
(13:47 on Sun 20/Mar/05)Does sound like the cv joint has gone. They can make a knocking noise at full lock and stay that 'bad' for years, but if yours is now making that kind of noise when driving straight ahead I'd proceed with caution. I am presuming it is coming from the front of the car and not the rear ??
(13:33 on Mon 21/Mar/05)Does sound like your CV joint, and as mdoo98 says, if noisy when going straight, caution is advised. If it disintegrates whilst moving, it won't be pretty. I had one of mine replaced last month. It's not that an expensive problem to rectify, and if it needs doing, do it.
