By running out of fuel, you have more than likely drawn rubbish from the bottom of your fuel tank, into the fuel line. It will now be causing a partial blockage, and your engine is being starved of fuel.
Sounds as though your mechanic has got enough work and does'nt want any more.
Get a second opinion.
Personally I would start by removing any filters and checking, cleaning and replacing them if need be. Maybe the fuel line needs a blast of air through it.

Are you a memberof a breakdown service, if so give them a call as the car is really not in a safe condition to be on the road.

no breakdown service any more, managed to get it going this morning and get it to the garage I live in a small town and I didnt really have a choice but to go back there the car was driving fine going there then same thing happened again,I have left it there for now I really hope he can fix it,great advice it will be nice to have an idea before I go back to speak to him.
The fuel tank/pump pickup needs to be checked.
The fuel filter should be replaced under these circumstances.
