Panasonic DVD Recorder Handset tricky

I am getting used to a new Panasonic DVD Recorder ( EM 768 EB ) - it looks like just what i need , except for a couple of niggles.
1. The Programme Guide is very cramped into about a third of the screen, chiefly to make way for advertising! It's the built in guide and i don't suppose you can change it for a better one?

2. The handset is horrible. The direction arrows cut grooves in your thumb as you use them - which is a lot as they navigate the guide. I'm already thinking about a universal remote. Question is , are there any out there that you have used and would recommend?
