Diesel peugeot black smoke on startup

Hi, my 206 smokes badly when starting cold. runs fines and starts fine with no smoke when warm. Any ideas?

Is the car Petrol or Diesel ?.

Sounds like the Valve stem seals on the head are gone.

Over night oil seeps through the valve stem seals into the cylinders, this is burnt along with the fuel, producing smoke.

TIP : When it comes up to MOT day ensure the car is hot when you take it, as the CO2 levels will be high.

black smoke from a diesel engine is a sign it is running slightly rich, if it disapears when wamed up, i wouldn't worry too much, black smoke indicates that more diesel is being burned than is necessary, whilst whitish to grey/blue smoke indicates that the fuel is being compressed but not igniting, usually accompanied by quite a bit of knocking, called diesel knock, very often caused by an injector dripping slightly overnight, this knock can be quite allarming to the newcommer to diesel engines,
Again no big deal,
But as Bravo1 says, always get engine well heated before an MOT.

try putting some Forte injector cleaner in the fuel, it's worth a try,

Cheers guys, I am not talking a bit of smoke here, this thing is bellowing black smoke to the point you cant see the car! only on cold start though. It has a mechanical diesel pump not electric injectors. Some one said the pump maybe at fault. I wonder if the valve seals are perished

if it is a mechanically controlled pump then there may be a way of adjusting it, we used to do it on the old tx1 taxis and metrocabs with the transit 2.5 di engines to get them through smoke tests on local authority taxi tests.

Don't worry my friend, everyday I see Eastern European Lorries travelling up the M2 in Kent from the coast with Black smoke pouring out the back !.
